Our 48th consecutive Trash Pick Up in Laguna

No Comments 1st Saturday, Laguna Beach, News, ZT News

Saturday, Nov 5th, 2011 marks ZeroTrash’s 4th B’Day.

The movement began on 1st SAT, Nov 3rd, 2007 at Brooks St. with a handful of local “Adopter’s” combing the Streets, Gutters, Sidewalks and parks for Trash, Recyclables and Cigarette Butts.

ZeroTrash circulated a petition throughout town asking citizens if more Trash Cans, Recycling Bins and Ashtrays were needed along Laguna’s streets to ameliorate the trash which had become commonplace along Laguna’s streets & in our gutters. 1000 signatures were gathered in one month, presented to the City which, overtime responded by placing 20 3-in-1 cans downtown and adding 30 more cans, mostly along Coast Highway. Ashtrays were affixed to many existing cans, as well.

the 1st SATURDAY Pick It Up! Events became the cornerstone of the movement. It rallies residents to local businesses on the 1st Saturday of EVERY month form 10 to Noon to remove the trash from the streets and gutters surrounding those businesses while in return, receiving a discount from that business.

The ZeroTrash Mission: We are a community clean-up project ridding city streets of trash, reducing waste, supporting local business and taking personal responsibility for the environment.

Today, In Laguna Beach, there are 5 “1st Saturday Pick It Up!” “Storefront” locations: Hobie Sports Downtown, Laguna Beach High School (where Club ZeroTrash LBHS was formed in 2009) Thalia Surf Shop, El Ranchito & United Studios of Self Defense in So Lag.

Over the years other Laguna businesses and organizations have participated in the 1st SATURDAY Program:
Yogaworks, St. Mary’s Church, Church by The Sea, UPS Store, Victoria Skimboards, La Sirena, Stand Up Paddle Co., Gorjana, Laguna Surf & Sport & Whole Foods Market. Since 2007, thanks to Carts provided by Waste Management ZeroTrash has removed over 70,000 of Trash and Recyclables from Laguna’s Streets, Parks, Gutters and Beaches.

ZeroTrash incorporated, then became a non-profit before expanding the program to 4 other communities: Dana Point from Girl in the Curl Surfshop, Newport Beach Penninsula & Corona Del Mar both from Avila’s El Ranchito stores and ZeroTrash Chico, from Bella’s Sports Pub. We are currently organizing ZT Chapters in Mission Viejo & in Phoenix AZ.

Thanks to generous support from both founding Sponsor XS Energy Drinks and sponsor Miocean along with many “Storefront Supporters” and personal donations along the way, ZeroTrash has brought communities together to rally against the onslaught of all too common Street trash.

ZeroTrash goes into the schools with it’s Trash Talks assembly program, teaching kids the value of recycling and eliminating waste at home and in their communities

ZeroTrash works with local city governments to upgrade their public trash and recycling infrastructure to provide the public with a obvious, systematic placement of cans on every street corner, wherever possible.

On Saturday Oct 15 ZeroTrash, with a donation from Greg & Barbara MacGilivary’s One World One Ocean Foundation, will assist in the International Coastal Clean-Up Canyon to Mainbeach Trash Pick-Up. The event starts at the Boys and Girls Club in Laguna Canyon @ 930 AM collecting Trash along Laguna Canyon ending @ Mainbeach to Pick It Up! on Mainbeach.
