ZeroTrash started as a grassroots community clean up project in Laguna Beach. Some of our earliest supporters were the students of Laguna Beach High School. We love hearing back from these students as they grow up, leave town (sometimes) and carry the ZT ethos with them along the way. Sometimes they pop up and give something back that we just have to share.

Sarah Sampson first showed up at a ZTL 1st Saturday early last year. She initially came to get a few extra hours of community service required by LBHS for graduation, but quickly became one of our most dedicated young members. Sarah has since graduated and now pursues a degree up in Santa Cruz. She called in recently to gather some information for a research paper on the perils of plastic in the US. Here is an excerpt from Sarah’s essay:

After spending countless Saturdays with the ‘red army,’ I started to become more knowledgeable about the local and global issues involved with waste pollution along coastlines. The biggest issue I learned about: the Pacific Gyre. The gyre, also known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is an immense “vortex of floating plastic trash that is… twice the size of Texas.” The swirling vortex has left this area of the Pacific Ocean completely desolate and containing almost no life. Also, many of the marine creatures and the ecosystem have been significantly impacted by the severe amount of trash in the gyre. With the awareness of the global ocean pollution levels, I promised myself that I would change the amount of waste in Laguna and, hopefully, reducing the pollution in the Pacific Gyre.

With the random opportunity to volunteer with ZeroTrash Laguna, my goals toward environmental conservation had changed. I always assumed that pollution was on a global scale, but I was wrong. It is on both a global and community scale. Because of the first Saturday Pick-Ups, I realized that a small community can inspire change on a mass scale. ZeroTrash Laguna helped to give me an inspiration in which I can help to save the environment in a simpler way. Pollution is on a global scale, but change can be done by personal action. My hope is that I can evoke change with the knowledge I have received from the community-inspired change I have experienced first hand.

Very cool, Sarah. Thanks for taking us with you.

Thanks to the amazing support we have received from the Heroes of ZeroTrash Laguna, we’ll now have two new projects up and running come February 6. For those of you who just tuned in, the cornerstone of ZeroTrash is our 1st Saturday program. It’s when us residents team up with local businesses in our communities to pick up the town on the 1st Saturday of every month.

Back to Febrary 6. That will be “1st Saturday” of the month and it’s going to be our biggest event to date. We’ve got a few things going on that day in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach & Dana Point. All seven of our Storefront Supporters will still be going strong in Laguna. Make sure to get the specifics at zerotrashlaguna.org if that’s your neck of the woods. For those of you who live further north, ZeroTrash Newport is throwing a big kickoff event on the Peninsula for the new coalition there with Earth Resource Foundation, Keep California Beautiful, & Surfrider NB. We will be throwing a big party and press event after the pick up. Head to zerotrashnewport.org for more details. Further South in Orange County we have the inaugural 1st Saturday for our brand spankin’ new project in Dana Point. Learn how to become one of the founding members at zerotrashdanapoint.org.

We’ve got some great momentum right now and it’s all thanks to those of you who are sick of seeing trash all over your streets and beaches. If you would like to volunteer, we’re always looking for new blood. Join us February 6 in taking personal responsibility for the environment.

These are our communities. Pick Them Up!
